The Olga Havel Award 2011

Věra Strnadová was the laureate of the Olga Havel Award 2011.

On the 23rd of May 2011, the Committee of Good Will – Olga Havel Foundation awarded the seventeenth Olga Havel Award. The prestigious Award was given to Věra Strnadová for her life-long interests in helping people with hearing disorders. The ceremony was held at the ČSOB (the Czechoslovak Business Bank) in Radlice, in the presence of the OHF President of the Board Dana Němcová, bishop Václav Malý, the CEO of the ČSOB Pavel Kavánek, and Mayor of Prague Bohuslav Svoboda. On this occasion the Olga Havel Foundation gave thanks to significant donors and partners, and awarded outstanding projects.

When Věra Strnadová was a child, she suffered a severe illness and became deaf. She´s been helping to improve living conditions of citizens with hearing disorders, and remove barriers especially to communication, transport, healthcare, and audio-visual media. Věra Strnadová continues in these activities, regardless of the serious health problems she had during the last few years, which caused her limitations to functioning physically. She is the vicepresident of the Association of organization of deaf people and their friends in the Czech Republic, leads a commission for closed captioning and legislative commission (honoured status). She took part in the implementation of laws about communication systems for deaf and blind people, and a new form of social service – simultaneous overwriting of the spoken word. She initiated and introduced the duty to include subtitles in DVDs of Czech production. She has written eleven publications which contribute to improving the public understanding of people with severe hearing disorders.
