Alena Jančíková, head of the Czech Association of Paraplegics, was awarded the nineteenth Olga Havel Award.
The prize was awarded by the Committee of Good Will - Olga Havel Foundation at the Kampa Museum, in the presence of its director Meda Mládková, President of the Board of Directors Dana Němcová, bishop Václav Malý, Diana Sternbergová and other members of the Board. On this occasion the Foundation gave thanks to significant donors and partners and awarded outstanding projects of non-profit organizations. The cultural part of the event was presented by the Quintet of the Prague conservatory. The event was moderated by Jarmila Balážová.
Wheelchair user Alena Jančíková was awarded for helping people who got paralysed after suffering a spinal cord injury. When she was eighteen she fell from a tree and suffered a spinal cord and back injury, then got paralysed. She finished high school on a wheelchair, worked at the Town Hall in Bruntál, later at the Paraple Centre in Prague. Today she is the Head of the Czech Association of Paraplegics and uses her life experience for giving strength, energy, motivation and support to others so they can start a new life with a handicap. “To me, laureate represents a person who does not focus on himself or his pain but rather notices other people´s needs,” said Václav Malý while awarding Alena Jančíková.
